New Award Categories to Include “Next Big Scene,” “Most Inspiring Fan Outreach,” and “Analog Genius”

New York, May 01, 2013 – MTV/VH1/CMT today announced its disruptive and groundbreaking O Music Awards will return for its fourth cycle on June 19th at 7pm ET/4pm PT to honor the artists, innovators and fans that are impacting music and counter culture.

Beginning today, O Music Awards will launch the “Make a Band Famous” opportunity on Viacom Music Group’s artist platform (Artists.MTV, Artists.VH1, Artists.CMT) where fan support and a committee of music curators will bring five emerging artists to O Music Awards to vie for a once-in-a-lifetime shot to play VMA weekend in August, as well as be featured as part of MTV’s Artist to Watch, VH1’s You Oughta Know, or CMT’s Listen Up music discovery franchises.

O Music Award categories epitomize the current state of music culture and memes. Returning categories will include “Digital Genius Award,” “Fan Army FTW,” “Best Web-Born Artist,” “Must Follow Artist on Twitter,” “Best Music App,” “Too Much Ass For TV” and “Best Artist Instagram. Inaugural categories include “Next Big Scene,” which recognizes emerging genres and music trends, “Most Inspiring Fan Outreach”, honoring musicians who are leveraging digital platforms in innovative ways to reach their fans and,“Analog Genius” honoring artists who are using old technology in groundbreaking ways On May 16, the complete list of categories and nominees will be revealed and voting will kick off via OMusicAwards.com.

The awards will play out during the course of a 24-hour “Live Music Day”, which will feature live performances from around the country. More than 50 bands will be showcased during the 24-hour period. Following the live performances, select clips will be available to view via each performer’s Artists.MTV page.

O Music Awards will also feature The Roots band leader and drummer ?uestlove kicking off a 24-hour-drum-a-thon that will serve as the heartbeat for “Live Music Day”. In the coming weeks, performing artists and venues, along with drummers will be announced.

“The O Music Awards are truly one of the first successful digital programming initiatives from a large media company that’s resonated with both fans and advertisers,” said Dermot McCormack, Head of Viacom Music and Logo’s Connected Content Group. “With this cycle, we’ll once again push the boundaries of storytelling across all screens, while for the first time providing emerging artists a huge stage to grow their fan bases.”

Previous O Music Awards have included Chiddy of Chiddy Bang setting the record for the longest ever freestyle and Wayne Coyne and Flaming Lips setting the world record for most shows played in a 24-hour period.

Past O Music Award winners have included Bjork (Digital Genius Award), Kanye West (Best Tweet), Tokio Hotel (Fan Army FTW), Nirvana (Best Vintage Viral Video), Spotify (Most Addictive Social Music Service), Aquarium Drunkard (Best Independent Music Blog), Way Out West (Most Innovative Festival) and CrowdJuke (Best Music Hack).

The previous award shows have featured a myriad of performers that span multiple genres, including Mumford & Sons, The Flaming Lips, Robyn and; and have been springboards to launch artists including Hunter Hayes, Foster the People, Mac Miller and Alabama Shakes.
